Governor of Osun state Rauf Aregbesola, is under fire from a human right group, the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice, over the unpaid eight months salaries of Osun state workers.
The group today, June 12, organised a protest in Osogbo to express their displeasure to the governor’s actions. Angry workers during the protest in Osogbo marched from Igbona to Olaiya junction.
This action caused traffic until the state police took over the scene to ensure maximum security and orderliness.
The protesters were seen with placards bearing different forms of inscriptions calling on the governor to offset the entitlement of its state workers.
Some of the inscriptions said: “pay workers and pensioners their entitlements” while others read, “Aregbesola, bring back our money.”
Human Right chairman, Mr. Sulaiman Alimi confessed that the Governor of the state has failed his people and blamed past administration for the ongoing financial crisis in the state.
According to Punch,” I want to say it emphatically that Governor Rauf Aregbesola has failed the people of Osun State because he created this by mismanaging the allocation which accrued to the state. This is why he has not been able to pay workers for seven to eight months”.
In his advice to the state governor, he asked Governor Aregbesola to resign before he is impeached from office.
” I am using this medium to advise Aregbesola, to resign honourably from office before he will be sent out of Osun State back to Lagos where he and his allies came from. Aregbesola has failed in running the affairs of the state and the people can no longer bear the untold hardship any longer.” he added.
Mr. Ismeal Uthman the Publicity Secretary of Osun Civil Societies Coalition, Mr. Ismeal Uthman expressed his sympathy over the nonpayment of staff salary in the state.
Speaking on why the protest was held, Uthman said “We dedicate this year June 12 to the Osun workers; to specially call on Governor Rauf Aregbesola to timely find solution to the nonpayment of the workers’ salaries. A hungry man is an angry man and there is no appeal for someone that is hungry. Aregbesola should act fast before hunger leads to death.”
Meanwhile, Aregbesola has blamed his inability to offset the salaries of Osun state workers on the current financial status in the state.
